Plasterers & renderers in Oldham

A regular patch for us, and an area where external wall insulation genuinely changes how a house feels to live in.

Plastering & rendering in Oldham

Oldham and the townships around it are somewhere we work a lot. It’s a different job to the one we do south of Manchester: more solid-wall property, more exposure, and houses that are genuinely expensive to heat rather than just looking a bit tired.

That shifts the balance of the work. Down in Cheadle a render job is usually about appearance. Up here it’s very often about warmth first and appearance second — and the good news is you get both out of the same visit.

The housing round here

A cotton town, so terraces dominate — red brick and stone, a great deal of it built before cavity walls were standard. That solid-wall construction is the defining feature of the area for our trade: there’s no cavity to fill, so the only practical way to insulate is from the outside. Around that core there are interwar and post-war semis, much of it pebbledashed, and the ground rises steadily towards Saddleworth where exposure to driven rain becomes a real factor.

What we're usually called out for in Oldham

  • External wall insulation on solid-wall terraces and semis
  • Stripping failed pebbledash and re-rendering in silicone
  • Render repairs on exposed and elevated property
  • Internal plastering and ceiling work during renovation
  • Rendering to extensions and dormer conversions

If your house was built before the 1930s there’s a good chance it has solid walls. Worth checking before you spend money on render alone — for not a great deal more you can insulate at the same time and only pay for the scaffold once.

Questions

Oldham, answered

How do I know if my house has solid walls?

A quick guide: measure the depth of an external wall at a window or door reveal. Much under about 260mm and it’s likely solid. Brickwork where you can see the short ends of bricks appearing in the pattern is another good sign. We’ll confirm it when we survey.

Is external wall insulation worth doing on a terrace?

On a mid-terrace you’ve only got the front and back to treat, so it’s often better value than on a detached house. The usual complication is the front elevation and whether the street has a consistent look — worth a word with the planning department if you’re in a conservation area.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the size of the job, what's already there and how much preparation it needs, which is why we visit before confirming a figure. You'll get an itemised written price with no obligation to go ahead.
