Oldham and the townships around it are somewhere we work a lot. It’s a different job to the one we do south of Manchester: more solid-wall property, more exposure, and houses that are genuinely expensive to heat rather than just looking a bit tired.

The housing round here

A cotton town, so terraces dominate — red brick and stone, a great deal of it built before cavity walls were standard. That solid-wall construction is the defining feature of the area for our trade: there’s no cavity to fill, so the only practical way to insulate is from the outside. Around that core there are interwar and post-war semis, much of it pebbledashed, and the ground rises steadily towards Saddleworth where exposure to driven rain becomes a real factor.
